About Hangzhou Normal University

Hangzhou Normal University started as Zhejiang Official Dual-Level Normal School in 1908. It was renamed Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School in 1913. In times of upheaval, the university set changes in motion and emerged as Zhejiang’s pioneer in democracy and science. In 1978, Hangzhou Teachers College was formed on the basis of Hangzhou Normal School. At the turn of the 21st century, multiple institutions were successively combined with Hangzhou Teachers College. 2007 marked the birth of the new Hangzhou Teachers College, officially today’s Hangzhou Normal University.

With 24 schools, and 2 affiliated hospital, Hangzhou Normal University has Cangqian, Xiasha and Yuhuangshan campuses, covering a total area of about 190 hectares, with a total construction area of 1.9 million square meters. It has 2614 staff members and more than 31,000 full-time students, including more than 24,000 undergraduates, around 6,000 graduate students and 100 doctoral students, about 300 international degree students and 250 international language students.

With 13 of its disciplines in the top 1% of international ESI disciplines among which 3 disciplines rank in the top 5‰, the University is now among China’s top 100 by ESI ranking and has secured a leading position among its provincial peers when it comes to the overall strength of disciplines.

HZNU keeps a close eye on the Belt and Road Initiative and follows closely what is going on globally. The University, which is among the first to be accredited by China Education Association for International Exchange for international student education,co-runs a center for Chinese language education and cooperation in partnership with Middle Tennessee State University in the United States, a Joint Institute with Kharkiv National University in Ukraine and a Joint Program at Master Level with the University of Canberra in Australia. Friendly ties have been established with over 70 renowned universities around the world, confirming its belief that openness and inclusiveness should be the tone for international exchanges.

About the School of International Eduation

Hangzhou Normal University was first authorized to enroll overseas students in 1993 and became one of the first 5 institutions of higher learning within the province that was authorized to enroll and train overseas students. In 1994, the Exchange Center of International Culture and Education came into being and changed its name into the Exchange Center of International Education in 2001. In the April of 2008, the School of International Education, an independent school was officially established on the basis of the former Exchange Center of International Education. The school is committed to providing overseas students both long-term and short-term Chinese courses; the enrollment and management of overseas students of Chinese Language major; HSK training programs; enrollment and management of overseas students who intend to earn BA and MA degrees at HNU; the Program of Volunteers of Chinese Language International Popularization, which is authorized by the Office of Chinese Language Council International; the HSK Examination Center; as well as the various training programs of Chinese Language teachers assigned by the municipal government and the university.

The School is situated on Cangqian Campus which offers a picturesque environment for easy communication and accommodation. The teaching building covering over 2000 sq meters can hold almost 200 overseas students to study within. Li Yuan, the dorm for overseas students, equipped with sophisticated facilities provides rooms for over 200 overseas students. The school boasts an outstanding teaching staff. Of the total 16 full-time teachers, 3 are professors, 3 associate professors and 8 teachers with doctoral degrees. Under the jurisdiction of the school, there are Office of Studies, Students’ Affairs Office, General Affairs Office, and Reference Room for Overseas Students, etc..

Since 1993, overseas students from USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, Israel, France, Luxemburg, Mexico, Mauritania, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. have come to HNU to study Chinese language, fine arts, music and other majors. Some came to bid for their BA or MA degrees. Throughout the years, the overseas education at HNU is distinctively featured by its teaching conducted in small classes, professional teaching staff, well-organized management, sophisticated accommodation and series of extracurricular activities. At present, the total number of the overseas students to study at HNU has reached over 300.

As an comprehensive institution of higher education with a glorious tradition in teacher training and a wide spectrum of disciplines in philosophy, literature, history, education, economics, law, management, arts, science, engineering and medicine, Hangzhou Normal University has distinctive advantages in its education of international students. The university started enrolling international students in early 1900s, and in some 20 years’ time, it has trained several thousands of international students coming for degree and non-degree studies from over 50 countries, including USA, Canada, UK, Belgium, France, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Pakistan, Australia and Kenya. In 2012, the university had an enrollment of over 600 international students doing studies in Chinese language and culture or working for undergraduate or graduate degrees in programs such as Chinese Language and Literature, Economics, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Education, Clinical Medicine, Health Care and Management.

The university currently has a doctoral program of Preventive Medicine, over 80 Master’s degree programs and over 60 Bachelor’s degree programs. It boasts quite a few strong disciplines, such as Condensed Matter Physics, Biology, Organic Chemistry,Music,curriculum and teaching theories, Modern and Contemporary Chinese History, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Zoology, Health Care Management and a number of National Programs with Distinctive Features, which include biology, primary education, chemistry, and computer science and technology. The university has been making special efforts to internationalize its undergraduate and graduate programs of Health Care Management, E-commerce, Nursing, etc. with the aim of enabling international students to do their program studies using English as the working language. In addition, the university has also been cooperating actively with international partners to develop internet video courses with English as a medium of instruction, thus creating even better conditions to meet different needs of international students.

Hangzhou Normal University is an authorized institution for enrolling and training international students sponsored by China’s Government Scholarship. It is also the partner institution for developing the Confucius Institute at Middle Tennessee State University, USA. As a result, the university has been provided by governments in China, both central and local, with various funds to set up scholarships to attract outstanding international students to do studies here on its campuses.

Hangzhou Normal University currently has 3 campuses, all located in Hangzhou, a world-famous tourist resort reputed for its breath-taking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. In the fall of 2013, the university moved to a new campus, which, with “Cangqian” as its name. is adjacent to the picturesque Xixi National Wetland Park in the western part of Hangzhou. On the campus, there has been set up an “International Education Complex” that occupies a floor space of about 60000 square meters. The complex, with all the modern and advanced facilities for studies and life, can accommodate 1500 international students.
