The Story of Hao Dali

The first day I visited the museum was on the 14th of September 2023, alongside my friends with our teachers. First day everything looked unfamiliar, and quite challenging. Thanks to the museum tour guides, they made us comprehend the meaning of every artifact in the exhibition hall of A, which gave us a glimpse of 10 thousand years ago of Zhejiang which has numerous cultures. At first it was too much but as I kept going around the museum, I felt like I started understanding the life of the people in the ancient Zhejiang mostly like the hemudu, people, the shangshan people, with their economic activities like Rice cultivation, and liangzhu people who had one of the artifacts that took me quite a time to understand or relate them in normal life. I cannot forget about the bronze house of music which has a mesmerizing architecture that one stares for hours. It was until one week that I decided to volunteer to be a tour guide, one of the decisions that are scary but worth a try. At first, I missed some of the words I that described the artifact because I had crammed their meaning without understanding the actual meaning of the artifacts. Thanks to my Chinese teacher, Doctor 李雯静, whom on the day of Sunday the 24th of September, took her time to accompany me at my first time to volunteer, She did not make me cram all the artifacts, she made me understand, what they represented and how it was described in the ancient times of Zhejiang in different cultures and people.

The next time I volunteered to guide tours of the museum in English translation, and I couldn’t say how happy I was of how I was able to explain each artifact without relying on the crammed words but with the combination of the real meaning and also the understanding of the artifacts that helped me excel at my volunteering.

Culture is not only people, what they do, their ways of living, the ways of entertainment, what they believe in and how all surroundings bring meaning to them, all comes together into making a meaningful culture of the Zhejiang people. Today, I feel curious to know more about the culture of Chinese people of how they were able to build skyscrapers, from building houses laying the stakes, what their dressing style mean to them, why they use chopsticks to eat, why they use pottery and porcelain bowls, and to understand generations from generations. As a country that I will be living in for the next three years, I want to understand more considering that in the future I want to engage in trade which I will be working with Chinese citizens. Understanding their culture, speaking their language, is being a part of their Chinese society. It’s what I want to do, and by learning the Chinese culture in general is the best way to be part of the Chinese society. To everyone who would like to start from the museum, and anyone in Zhejiang, start from Zhejiang provincial museum zhijiang.

THE FORTH

The Story of Wei Mingjun

My time as an Indonesian student in China, along with my volunteer work at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, has been an insightful journey that deepened my grasp of Chinese culture and history. At the museum, I had the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of artifacts that spanned different periods and cultures. Walking through the museum’s halls, I had a chance to explore various past chinese cultures, such as the Shangshan, Hemudu, and Liangzhu cultures, which provided valuable insights into the evolution of art and architecture over thousands of years. One of my favourite artifact was the Jade Cóng, known as the “King of Jade Cóngs,” with its intricate carvings and what it symbolises, it left a strong impression on me. Congcong, one of the Asian games mascot is actually named after this very artifact, which I found to be interesting. Beyond the artifacts themselves, I had the privilege of interacting with museum visitors from various backgrounds, sharing my knowledge, and witnessing their interest in the region’s history. This aspect of volunteering added a practical dimension to my studies. In all honesty, my journey as an Indonesian student in China, combined with my volunteer work at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, has been an enriching and educational experience. It has broadened my cultural horizons and allowed me to appreciate the historical roots that continue to influence contemporary Chinese society.
